Stonehenge Alliance: Letter of concern to UNESCO, 10 August 2003

The Stonehenge Alliance
From the Chairman, Lord Kennet

Mr Francesco Bandarin,
Director, UNESCO World Heritage Centre,
7 Place de Fontenoy,
75352 Paris 07 SP,
France.

10 August 2003

Dear Mr Bandarin,

Stonehenge

I have been asked to write to you by the Committee of the Stonehenge Alliance about the alarming proposals for the roads at Stonehenge.

I enclose a copy of our letter to the Highways Agency which registers our objection to the Draft Road and Compulsory Purchase Orders.

We applaud the efforts of the National Trust (owners of land involved) and ICOMOS-UK to demand better solutions for protecting the whole World Heritage Site and making it accessible to visitors. We hope that they will receive the firm backing of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

We hope that you will consider sending a delegation to England to look into the matter. If so, we would be very glad to meet with your representative(s) to discuss the issues. Failing that, we would like to suggest that we come to see you in Paris to let you know of our particular concerns and to seek your support.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Lord Kennet
Chairman, The Stonehenge Alliance
