RESCUE meeting, 19th July 1999

RESCUE (the British Archaeological Trust) organized a meeting to discuss concerns about the Master Plan at the Society of Antiquaries in London. The scheme was supported by former English Heritage chief archaeologist Dr Geoffrey Wainwright and David Thackeray of the National Trust. Peter Stone of the Council for British Archaeology raised a number of concerns held by the CBA. Archaeologists Kate Fielden and Gill Swanton attacked the scheme as a poor and highly damaging substitute for a long-bore tunnel. An overwhelming majority of attendees supported a motion criticizing the Master Plan. Road protesters present at the meeting pledged to take direct action if the Highways Agency attempted to drive through a cut-and-cover tunnel. RESCUE has published a full summary of the meeting in RESCUE News 79.
