Prominent Local Anti-Bypass Campaigner Vindicated

Today, at Newbury Magistrate Court, Jill Eisele was cleared of a charge of using threatening abusive words or behavior - a charge which she has always denied. Jill was arrested on 27th March this year on the bypass route in the Kennet Valley.

The case had been adjourned twice previously; today a Material Witness ( a Security Guard) failed to appear, and the prosecution was unable to present a tenable case. 3 police officers appeared as witnesses for the prosecution, but the magistrates accepted that the prosecution had no case Costs were then awarded to the defendant from Central Funds.

Jill Eisele said:

"This absurd case shows how far the authorities will go to try and stifle legitimate protest. My anger on the day was directed at the Government and Highways Agency, who were breaking a legal undertaking not to bring heavy equipment on site"

Jill is now considering taking legal action against the police for wrongful arrest and malicious prosecution.
